My super fantabulous new designer (and I do love calling her MY designer), Hannah Bennett worked really hard for close to two months redesigning the magazine once we realized it would be just she and I producing ten issues per year beginning this month. (Josh has moved on to work exclusively on U.S. Eventing TV, which is really exciting, and I’m glad to get to be involved in that adventure as well.) As she built her templates, she had very specific goals. We both agreed that the text should be easy to read and the photos should shine, and we wanted the overall look and feel of the book to be clean, and above all professional.
The direction we have taken slightly turns away from the more popular designs of today that involve pages filled to the edges with loudly colored boxes and frills and other distracting THINGS. We wanted to go back to the basics: Incredible photos, non-distracting type face, and well-presented stories. We are both extremely excited about the new layout. We made a few other changes to the magazine as a whole, with one very special exciting new feature that we are not going to reveal just yet.
I understand the 2012 Issue 10 magazine is reaching mailboxes right now (those darn post office holidays. slowing us down). We’ve already begun proofing 2013 Issue 1 and it is scheduled to be received on January 28 (give or take a few days depending on your post office), but we are ahead of schedule, so you might be getting it five or so days sooner than that!
Hannah is just out of college, and I’ve been in the professional world of magazine publishing for just over a year. We are new and a little nervous, but excited and feeling full of opportunities and the chance to learn and explore our profession. Hannah has been great to work with. We have similar styles but also have the ability to compromise 🙂 I like the fact that we choose photos together and have very specific reasons for printing the ones that we use. She helps me with sorting out stories, and she is open to suggestions in the design. Teamwork like this is what produces a good product, and I’m really looking forward to the year (although thinking about ten issues all at once can be a little overwhelming, so I try not to do that too much).
